Dec 1 Facility Workshop Recap

The Dec. 1 Facilities Workshop drew about 50 participants who sifted through scores of ideas and identified their preferences for accommodating D41's enrollment. This was not a matter of “voting” for a particular choice, but rather of providing a way for the board to understand more about the preferences of those who attended the workshop. D41 will continue to seek out feedback as it continues this process, noted Superintendent Dr. Jack Barshinger.

Next steps? The board has asked the administration to find out more about costs and implementation for ideas which participants showed the most support: adding space (either a new structure or additions), reconfiguring existing space for maximum efficiency, and using the Central Service building at 793 N. Main for classrooms and housing the administration elsewhere.

The board also asked for more information on the options of increasing class size, scheduling solutions like year ’round school and continuing the short-term strategy of using portables. "These less desirable solutions are generally employed by school districts when they are not able to fund other options and I agree it is good business practice to have comparative information available," said Barshinger, who added that he hopes to have more information to share with the public and the board at the Jan. 26 Board of Education meeting.
