Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education

The Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education consists of seven members who are elected at large and serve without pay for staggered four-year terms. The Board is accountable to the public and makes decisions as a unit based on what is best for the District as a whole. Board members follow the Board Code of Conduct and strive to adhere to their agreed upon Board of Education Meeting Norms. The Board hires the Superintendent, sets instructional policy, approves the budget and ongoing expenditures, and is ultimately responsible for the performance of the District. The Board and Superintendent work together to set priorities for the district.

The Board also includes 8th graders who are appointed in the fall. Students serve as non-voting advisory Student Board Members. Student members serve in a leadership capacity representing the student voice during Board conversations and decisions. The Superintendent and school Principal oversees the selection process which includes letters of recommendation from peers and staff members, and an anonymous review of the application by a district-wide selection committee.

SCHOOL BOARD GOVERNANCE RECOGNITION
The Board has been recognized by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) for their participation in the "School Board Governance Recognition" program for the 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 school year. This program acknowledges school boards that learn and practice effective governance behaviors as identified in IASB's Foundational Principles of Effective Governance, through participation in and support for board development programs and events. The primary focus of this program is on full board development and participation rather than individual board member efforts. Effective school boards understand that excellence in local school board governance requires full board commitment to obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities critical to good governance.

School Board Listing of Development, Training and Professional Development Completed by Board Members
Each Illinois school board member who is elected or appointed to fill a vacancy of at least one year’s duration must complete State-mandated professional development and leadership training (PDLT) and Open Meetings Act (OMA) training. State-mandated training is also required for board members who want to vote upon a dismissal based upon the Performance Evaluation Reform Act

The Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) is a voluntary organization of local boards of education dedicated to strengthening the Illinois public schools through local citizen control.  Although not a part of State government, IASB is organized by member school boards as a private not-for-profit corporation under authority granted by Article 23 of the School Code.  The mission of the IASB is excellence in local school governance in support of quality public education.

IASB’s Board Leader Recognition Program recognizes school board members for individual time and effort devoted to learning and leadership activities provided by the Association and for service to the public education community.  For more information regarding IASB and its programs visit www.iasb.com
