Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES)
Mission
We prepare students for an expanding global environment by accelerating academic excellence through the teaching of two languages. We foster the appreciation and understanding of multiculturalism.
Vision
Students in the FLES program will develop proficient communicative competence in the target language through integrated thematic instruction. Students will embrace diverse cultural perspectives.
Goals
Students will
- Participate in foreign language learning during the optimal years of acquisition
- Develop positive attitudes about languages and cultures other than their own
- Increase cognitive skills and academic abilities that will transfer to overall higher achievement
- Enter middle school above the beginning levels
Language Assessments
FLES students in 5th grade will be assessed each spring for language proficiency based on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines. Students in 8th grade will be assessed each Fall for language proficiency. These results will be used for placement recommendations in Foreign Language courses. AAPPL scores will also be used to monitor students' preparation for obtaining the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy in high school.
