Emergency Management
District 41 has emergency operations plans in place and regularly reviews, updates and practices its emergency procedures. Developed with the cooperation of Federal, State and local authorities, these procedures cover medical emergencies, weather emergencies, violence and crime including assaults and threats, hazardous material release, utility failure, and other situations that affect the welfare and safety of students, staff, visitors and the community. Questions about emergency procedures should be first directed to your building principal.

D41 has immediate access to the Glen Ellyn Police Department, and through them, access to a mutual aid organization of state, county and local agencies providing support during an emergency. Should our area be affected by a large-scale emergency such as a terrorist attack, these agencies would provide direction and support. In an emergency, District administrators will act immediately to implement appropriate building plans and notify the proper authorities. Once on the scene, police and fire representatives secure the building and take charge of the incident.

Students may be kept in the building, evacuated to the building grounds or taken to another location, depending on the situation.

D41 will use an automated phone system, text messaging, email, social media, D41 E-News, the media and the D41 website to inform parents of the situation.

Unless otherwise notified, parents are discouraged from coming to the school to pick up their children as this may interfere with emergency activities being carried out.

If emergency pickup is necessary, children will be released only to parents or to approved designees. Anyone picking up a child may be asked for identification, even parents.

You can help us anticipate and avoid crises: be alert when visiting school, report anything unusual that you observe or hear to your building principal, and set a good example by being patient and conscientious about following school security procedures.

WHAT YOU CAN DO---
Report any unlocked door to the principal immediately. Be patient with the inconvenience locked doors present to you.

Report directly to the school office when you enter a school, sign in and wear an identification badge. Please understand that you will be escorted to the office if you do not do so.

Report any unusual or disturbing behavior around school grounds immediately. Notify the principal during school hours or the Glen Ellyn Police after school hours.

Talk to your children about the importance of safe schools. Be sure they know what to do in an emergency. Be sure they understand the importance of reporting a student who threatens harm to himself or others. Confidentiality will be maintained to the fullest extent possible.

Remove guns from your home or put trigger locks on all guns kept in the home.

Have a back-up plan for child care if students must be sent home during an emergency.

Refrain from calling the school, which will tie up lines that will be needed for emergency use. Parents whose children are directly involved in a crisis will be contacted immediately.

Refrain from speaking to the media in crisis situations in order to avoid rumors and excessive disruptive coverage.
