Administrative Procedure - Dissection of Animals

Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Accountability

Identifies: (1) which, if any, courses contain a dissection project, and (2) Reports this information to the Building Principal.

“Dissection” includes cutting, killing, preserving, or mounting of living or dead animals or animal parts for scientific study; it does not include the cutting, preserving, or mounting of: (1) meat or other animal products that have been processed for use as food or in the preparation of food, or (2) wool, silk, glue, or other commercial or artistic products derived from animals. 105 ILCS 112/10.

Students who object to performing, participating in, or observing a dissection must be excused from classroom attendance without penalty. 105 ILCS 112/25.

Throughout the curriculum development process

Classroom Teacher

Requests approval from the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning and Accountability and the Building Principals of activity which include a dissection unit and the alternative activity that students will do if they object to the dissection unit. . Approved activities which contain a dissection unit must be in alignment with Board policy and Illinois School Code and require parent/guardian notification.


At least 10 days in advance of parent notice.

Building Principal

Following consultation with the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning and Accountability, notifies staff of the decision of the request to conduct a dissection unit.  


Approved activities which contain a dissection require parent/guardian notification.  For such activities, indicate that objecting students have the right to refrain, and the availability, if any, of an alternative.

Continuously as necessary

Classroom Teacher

Complete the required parent/guardian notification indicating that objecting students have the right to refrain from the activity, and the availability, if any, of an alternative.

If dissection is objectionable, asks the teacher to be excused from the dissection project and requests an alternative project.

Do not penalize or discriminate against a student in any way for refusing to perform, participate in, or observe dissection. 105 ILCS 112/25.
