Following is a summary of the Board of Education (BOE) meeting held on July 17, 2006. Minutes are posted on www.d41.org once approved.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS APPOINTED: The Board of Education (BOE) approved the appointment of three assistant principals. Heather Farrar, a teacher at Benjamin Franklin, will join the staff at Abraham Lincoln Elementary. Heather replaces Shannon Cross, who is now Lincoln’s principal. Heidi Fitch, who comes from District 89, will join Hadley Junior High. Heidi replaces Ryan Anderson, who left the District. Sherie Huber, Hadley Student Services Coordinator and Department Head, will join Benjamin Franklin Elementary. Sherie replaces Marcia Opal, who left the District. All three will begin their new roles in August. Assistant principals are integral in the operation, instructional leadership and building management in the schools. They assume responsibility in the principal’s absence, act as a community liaison, and assist in managing student services, special education, transportation and discipline. They also assist in supervising and evaluating teachers.

Next Meeting:
The next regular BOE meeting is set for Monday, Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Central Services, 793 N. Main St., Glen Ellyn. Special meetings may be called and their agendas will be posted on www.d41.org at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting.

SUPERINTENDENT, BOARD SET PRIORITIES: Superintendent Dr. Ann Riebock reported on short- and long-term plans that were developed at the July 2 BOE workshop. Dr. Riebock said she was grateful and excited to be in a community that places such a high value on education and said that in the immediate future, she will focus the organization on teaching and learning consistent with the direction set by the District Scorecard as well as work on developing smooth organizational transitions. Long-range planning will include ongoing work on the District’s continuous improvement plan for student achievement and developing a financial plan that supports learning goals as well as facility needs.

OTHER MATTERS: The BOE approved agreements totalling $87,000 with Benefitdecisions™, Inc. to provide employee benefit plan consulting, financial underwriting, insurance brokerage and account management services. The agreements support a change from a self-insured program in which the District contracted with a benefits broker, to a fully-insured program with Blue Cross Blue Shield that provides comprehensive and cost-effective coverage with a greater wellness component. The Benefitdecisions™ agreements cover work that the firm has completed to date to prepare for and carry out this change, as well as services it will provide through September, 2007. The BOE also decided on the format of their upcoming fall school visits. In past years, the BOE has toured all schools as a group; this year, BOE members will spend time individually with employees in the schools to get their perspectives.

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION: Resident Pete Ladesic spoke on behalf of TEE41, stating that the group’s membership included a variety of residents interested in quality education and financial responsibility.
