GLENBARD DISTRICTS ALIGNING THE ESSENTIALS
Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Accountability Karen Carlson provided an update on the Glenbard Associated Districts Initiative (GADI), specifically the work around curriculum. The project involves Glenbard High School District 87 and the six elementary districts whose students graduate to District 87: districts 15, 16, 41, 44, 89 and 93. GADI has been working since the spring of 2007 to align the districts on what is essential to improve student success. All seven Boards of Education have passed resolutions in support of this work, which will result in a core set of learning goals, assessments and processes at the elementary level that articulate with those at the high school level. Ms. Carlson said the group is enthusiastic about the work, has made substantial progress and has developed a positive momentum. The project will benefit student achievement in a number of ways, among them:
· All students will enter the Glenbard high school system well-prepared, because the feeder elementary districts and the high school district will have agreed on what is essential and have the needed curricula, instructional practices and professional development in place.
· The high school will be better able to serve students because it will know that students have a strong background in what all seven districts have identified as essential.
· Over time, the elementary districts will synchronize their curriculum review cycles so that they all remain aligned and current with best practices in curriculum and instruction, and with expectations at the high school level.
· The GADI collaborative framework provides opportunities for all the districts to learn from each other's strengths, challenges and solutions.
