What are attendance-area boundaries?
These are boundaries that define which addresses go to which elementary school within the district; this is distinct from district boundaries, which define the geographic scope of the whole district and which are not under the control of the district.
Why would these be adjusted?
Attendance-area boundaries determine enrollment at each school, and the district has adjusted them from time to time to maintain enrollment equity as our demographics and total enrollment change. In recent years, our growth has been uneven: Churchill and Abraham Lincoln schools are growing and are overcrowded. Forest Glen and Benjamin Franklin are stable and are not as crowded.

Are changes planned for 2006-2007?
No changes are planned for the 2006-2007 school year. The Board of Education will discuss adjusting attendance-area boundaries for the 2007-2008 school year when the information listed below has been determined. A Board decision will be based on the information collected.

What factors are considered in adjusting boundaries?
The administration and Board of Education recognize that adjusting boundaries is one of the most difficult decisions that Boards of Education make, and it is not something done lightly. Among the factors to be considered are:
- Are there other ways to address the space inequities apart from adjusting boundaries?
- Would boundary adjustments result in a significant improvement in space usage for a reasonable length of time?
- What would be the impact of adjustments on our students? Families? Staff? On the educational experience of our students?
- How would boundary adjustments impact socio-economic considerations among our schools?
- What do Federal and State guidelines say with respect to boundary adjustments?
- Are there other legal issues to be considered in adjusting boundaries?
- Is there sufficient advantage to be gained by adjusting boundaries?
- What steps could be taken to ease transitions for our families, should boundaries be adjusted?
