Hadley students tackle world issues
Current events have long been taught as part of Social Science, but in Don Brown’s sixth grade classes, Hadley students wrestled with a matter of state that has political leaders stumped: how to end US involvement in Iraq. They plan to send their best thinking straight to Washington. "I wanted them to bring what they’ve learned about early civilizations, government, power and religion to today’s events," said Don. "We learned about the Shia-Sunni split in our studies of Byzantium, and we start each day with current events—the project was a good opportunity to make connections." The students divided into small work teams and used critical thinking skills to define the problem, decide on a strategy, develop tactics and describe the expected results.

The proposal that won the most support among students gives Sunnis and Shiites an equal voice in government, provides for a prime minister along with two cabinet advisors—one Shiite and one Sunni—and rewrites the constitution to separate government from religion. "The group will be meeting to refine their proposal and create the narrative which will be sent to our State Representatives and to Washington," said Don.
