Outstanding musicians in D41
The Hadley String Orchestra, directed by Georgia Alemis, and the Hadley Symphonic Band, Directed by Don Crews, were recently awarded Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA) Honor Status. The Hadley String Orchestra was the only orchestra selected for this award in the state. The Hadley Symphonic Band was one of two bands selected for this award in the state. The Symphonic Band also performed at the Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival sponsored by the University of Illinois. This was the 15th out of 16 years that the band has been invited to this highly prestigious and competitive competition; during these years, Hadley bands have won the competition four times. Band and orchestra students work hard to meet the traditionally high standards of Hadley musicianship, practicing as a unit before school and participating in group lessons during the day. In addition, most take individual lessons as well.
Art Tech wins partnership award
Recently, the Hadley Art Technology program’s partnership with Josten’s Publishing was recognized as one of the best School/Business Partnerships for 2007. These partnerships, explains Art Tech teacher Frank Tomaszkiewicz, provide students with an opportunity to translate their academic skills into a product that mirrors the demands for the career world of the 21st Century. DuPage Area Occupational & Education Services, the College of DuPage, and the DuPage Regional Office of Education sponsor the Outstanding Partnership Awards to honor school/business partnerships that meet the criteria of the federal Education to Careers initiative—Hadley is the only middle school to win an award in each of the last nine years. Hadley's partnership allowed students to produce the school's first all-digital yearbook using software supplied by Jostens. In addition, the National Art Education Association has recognized Hadley Art Tech as one of the outstanding visual arts programs in America for 2006-2007. |
